Accelerated Technology's Nucleus RTOS Helps Power Chinese Market in Commercial Wireless Point-of-Sale Terminal

MOBILE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 2003--Accelerated Technology(R), the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT), today announced that its Nucleus(R) Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) was used to develop a wireless point-of-sale (POS) terminal, the M.POS2002, for consumers in the Chinese financial transaction market. An initial order for 5,000 terminals will soon be delivered to a major corporation in Beijing, launching this Nucleus-based device into the Chinese market.

M.POS2002, developed by M.POS Limited in Hong Kong, is an electronic funds transfer (EFT) POS capable of processing magnetic cards or smart card payments in real time from any location. The terminal can also capture and transmit data for corporate applications, make voice calls and even offer fingerprint verification. It has messaging capabilities that include sending, receiving and printing short message services (SMS), sending and receiving email messages and instant text messages.

Recent advances in electronic circuitry and the use of Nucleus software made the richness of functionality possible on a traditionally single-function device. The Nucleus RTOS is an industrial strength, multi-threaded environment suitable for secure and performance-critical applications involving financial transaction processing. It is portable, flexible and highly scalable, letting M.POS developers add only the features they want in their wireless terminal. In addition, M.POS developers took advantage of the source code and royalty-free business model that was provided with the Nucleus software. This allowed the cost savings to be passed on to M.POS customers.

"Nucleus provides all the system functionality we were looking for when we started planning this terminal. We had to be language-independent and capable of multiple communications protocols. The tools made the job of development significantly easier, and we have created something that suits our market very well at this time," said M.POS group CTO Derek Smith. "Nucleus PLUS is royalty-free, and this is also important in a market the size of China."

"Developers in the security transaction market need a reliable and proven RTOS to meet their specific needs. Nucleus software has been used in thousands of design wins resulting in an established reputation. This, along with the royalty-free business model for developing high-volume applications in cost-sensitive markets, made Nucleus a very appealing choice for M.POS Ltd," said Robert Day, director of marketing for the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics(R).
